Occupational Rehabilitation Department

Manual Handling Education Program

In addition to the variety of services provided under case management within the WorkCover and NSW Motor Accidents Authority CTP schemes, WORKCARE Medical’s rehabilitation department is always looking at ways to provide employers with a comprehensive approach to worker safety. A direct example of this is the recent increasing demand by employers for our Manual Handling and Office Ergonomics Education Programs, performed by our Occupational Therapists.

 

Our personalized approach has attracted the attention of a Major Food Company, consisting of several hundred employees across 3 shifts. Our team is in the process of meeting with their management, to construct a Manual Handling Education Program, which their Occupational Health & Safety Staff can provide to their workforce on a national basis. Surely an interesting project that will require accommodating the various state legislations, while still keeping the project specific to our client's needs.

Latest WorkCover requirements for renewal of First Aid qualifications

WorkCover has recently reviewed requirements for the renewal of First Aid qualifications. The requirement states:


To maintain currency, the First Aid Certificate must be re-certified after the successful completion of a First Aid Revision Course. Recertification must take place prior to the expiry date of a WorkCover NSW Approved First Aid Certificate. It is the responsibility of Providers with WorkCover Approved First Aid courses to ensure that this requirement is met.


To ensure you maintain your qualifications within the expiry period, WORKCARE Medical offers a reminder service, free of charge to students and their workplace. This service has helped all of our students remain fully qualified and notified of upcoming certificates due to expire. Save time and money by booking recertification courses early. This allows plenty of time for unexpected human resource demands when attending courses.

Latest in Workers' Compensation Laws

Are you aware of recent changes to the Workers Compensation Law in what constitutes wages for the purpose of premium calculations?


"For the purposes of your insurance premiums, wages include:- 

  • Salary, overtime, shift and other allowances, over-award payments, bonuses, commissions, payments to working directors, payments for public and annual holidays (including loadings), payments for sick leave, value of board and lodging provided by the employer for the worker, and
     
  • Any other benefit given to the worker under a contract of service or apprenticeship."


What has changed?


An increase in the amount of wages counted for workers compensation purposes
.


"For new or renewed policies on or after 4:00pm on 30th June 2003, wages will now also include:- 

  • Directors’ fees paid to working directors.
  • Employer superannuation contributions.
  • Grossed up value of fringe benefits.
  • Long service leave payments.
  • Termination payments (including lump sum payments for annual leave, long service leave and sick leave).
  • ...distributions to workers as beneficiaries under trusts, where the distribution is in lieu of wages."


WorkCover have offset the impact that these changes (i.e. increased wages), would have on the basic insurance premium calculation (= wages x premium rate) by reducing the average premium rate of all industry premium rates. Given however that premium rates are calculated on other factors including the claims record of a particular industry classification, some employers' premium rates will decrease while others may increase.

The rationale behind the changes is to ‘improve the stability of the workers compensation system and ensure that everyone pays their fair share’.
