PRE-PLACEMENT MEDICALS 2004

What is a Pre-Placement Medical?

The Pre-Placement Medical is a medical assessment and evaluation of a potential employees’ potential health risk during the selection process for an employment position within a company.

Why do Pre-Placement Medicals?

Employers have a duty of care to their employees. A Pre-Placement medical examination enables an employer to determine whether the prospective employee is medically suitable and physically able to perform the required task and duties. Identifying these factors will help employers make educated decisions when hiring staff and/or adjusting the workplace to accommodate any special needs an employee may have.

Medicals are conducted:

 ü       prior to employment

ü       on recommencing work following a period of absence

ü       on leaving employment

ü       periodic specific examinations

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRE-PLACEMENT MEDICALS

STANDARD:
Provides a brief overview of a potential employee’s health. The employer decides whether the applicant is medically suitable for the position based on the report.

COMPREHENSIVE: The Doctor assess whether the potential employee is medically suitable for the position and states this in the report.

COMPANY SPECIFIC: The company referring the applicant issues paperwork or specific medical screenings to be conducted during the Pre-Placement Medical. E.g. Drugs and Alcohol.

ü With our experience in pre-placement medicals, we recommend Comprehensive And/or Company Specific Medicals for a more detailed analysis of job suitability.

In relation to Comprehensive Pre-Placement Medicals;

Equal opportunity and disability discrimination legislation ensures the person’s ability to do the work is the paramount consideration. It is the employer’s and the health professionals concern that the work can be carried out with safety to the employee and others, regardless of disability. Pre-placement medicals and the decisions made in respect of them are upstanding if they are based on the essential requirements of a position. With a view to this, the employer should forward a job description outlining the physical requirements and the types of hazards that would significantly impact on the health and safety of the employee. Armed with this information, the examining doctor can make a recommendation on suitability for the position.
